INVERTED WAR I 2023

Appropriation of Winston Churchill’s The Second World War

«The Second War» is an appropriation of Winston Churchill’s seminal historical text, in which the canonical narrative of the Second World War is re-examined through the lens of Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine. Executed in leporello format — an extended accordion-folded structure that underscores the absence of closure in conflict — the work comprises a watercolor base, layers of tracing paper with handwritten texts, and a transparent mesh embroidered with the graph of nuclear escalation from 1945 to 2030. The project demonstrates how the rhetoric of “great victory” and heroic past is repurposed to justify new aggression, cynicism, and nuclear blackmail. Here, “The Second World War” serves as a mirror that exposes the criminal nature of the ongoing war.
